Marlow Dragon Boat Racing

Team B legal are entering this year’s Marlow Dragon Boat Race on 10th June at Higginson Park. After a training session last night, Guest Blogger, Diksha Chakravarti, a holistic Back Pain and Sports therapist, gives us some tips to help keep all competitors pain free on the day:-

Dragon Boat Racing is going to mainly tax your upper body but your lower back and legs are also going to be used.  So the best way to ensure you reduce risk of injury and don’t suffer too much from aches and pains is to stay hydrated, keep your abdominal muscles engaged and warm up & down before and after your training session/race.

Warm up : jog gently on the spot until you break out into a light sweat. Then do some of the stretches shown, not holding them for too long.

Warming down: simply re do these stretches, holding them for longer.  Listen to your body – your muscles will tell you when they have stretched adequately.

Remember to keep your abdominal muscles engaged all the time – keep your stomach pulled back towards your spine, this forms a vice around your spine, keeping it supported.  Keeping your muscles engaged whilst continuing to breath can be achieved easily with a little bit of practice.

Hydration is important  – a general rule of thumb is to drink 1 litre of water for 55lbs (25kg) of bodyweight; some people need more, some less.  Most adults can do with drinking 2litres/day.

Good luck to all the teams taking part!
